What to Pack for Your African Safari

Packing for a safari is mostly about being comfortable through changing temperatures and spending long periods outdoors. Mornings can feel cool in an open vehicle, afternoons may be hot, and dust is common on unpaved roads. Choose a small collection of easy-to-layer pieces rather than packing a different outfit for every drive.

Start with breathable shirts and trousers in neutral, muted colors. Lightweight cotton or technical fabrics are comfortable in the heat, and long sleeves can help with sun and insects. There is no need to buy a complete safari wardrobe; clothing you already own is usually fine if it is practical and easy to wash.

A warm layer is worth bringing even for a trip planned in a hot season. A fleece, light sweater or wind-resistant jacket can make a pre-dawn departure much more pleasant. A packable rain shell is useful during wetter months and takes up little room in a bag.

For footwear, choose comfortable closed shoes with a stable sole for camp paths and short walks. Sandals can be useful around a lodge or at the beach, but they are not a substitute for shoes on uneven ground. Follow your guide's instructions about when it is safe to walk outside camp.

Sun protection deserves its own packing space. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm, and keep a refillable water bottle close by. A small day bag helps organize these items so they are easy to reach during a drive without unpacking your main luggage.

Binoculars can make distant wildlife much easier to appreciate, while a camera or phone captures the moments you want to remember. Bring spare batteries, charging cables and enough memory space. A soft cloth or a simple dust-proof pouch can help protect camera equipment between sightings.

Keep personal essentials together: travel documents, any prescription medication, basic toiletries and a compact first-aid kit. If you use insect repellent, check the product directions and pack it where you can reach it. Carry medication in its original packaging and keep important items in your hand luggage.

Luggage limits vary, particularly on light aircraft transfers where soft-sided bags are often required. Confirm the exact weight and size rules with your tour operator before you leave, and weigh your bag at home. Laundry may be available at some camps, making it possible to pack fewer clothes for a longer stay.

A simple final check helps avoid overpacking: set aside what you will wear on the first travel day, confirm what your accommodation provides, and remove items that only serve one unlikely scenario. The goal is to feel ready for the day, not to carry your entire wardrobe across the savannah.
